1 to 1 Performance Facilitation

Relationships evolve between languages, histories, and identities.

The 1 to 1 performance facilitation invites one audience member to have an experience on their own with a performer. These works are site-specific, which means the place or location of the performance is conceptually connected to the theme and topic of discussion.

The 1:1 performances use dialogue to narrate ways relationships evolve between languages, histories, and identities, 1:1.

Waking Up Iranian American

Waking Up Iranian American is an autoethnographic work and series of four 1 to 1 performances focused on the ways cultural exchange develops between people through facilitated dialogue. Participants are invited to partake in discussions and actions about identity, nationalism, and xenophobia. The purpose is to move beyond antiquated notions of free and oppressed.

In this sense, the dialogical framework of the performances is a form of collaboration and, in its broadest sense, a key to changing power relationships between performers and participants. In Waking Up Iranian American, social intimacy is used as a strategy to counteract the positioning cultures of fear intend to create.

The dialogical framework of the performances are collaborative and key to changing power relationships between performers and participants.

Documentation of the participants’ experiences during the 1:1 performances are artworks, such as textiles, self-made identity cards, photographs, videos, sound art, scripts, and choreographic scores.

These artworks are used to initiate group conversations during exhibitions and serve as content for the performative interventions such as, Formulations of Assembly, Move with US, and Around the Table.
